Seated At His Feet
"Mary was listening to the Lord's word, seated at His feet." Luke 10:39
The Bible mentions Mary on three separate occasions: here, where her sister gets annoyed at her for not helping in the preparations for a meal, when Lazarus dies, and when she anoints the Lord's feet with rare perfume. All three passages have one common thread: Mary is at Jesus' feet. Mary sat at Jesus' feet to learn of him, she threw herself at his feet when she was in despair over her brother's death, and she knelt at his feet in worship when she anointed him with costly perfume. Because Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened, she knew who he was. She understood his mission and she knew when to show her appreciation and love for him. It was only because she had such intimate contact with her Lord that she was able to know how to touch his heart and reach out to him. His disciples thought such an act was a waste. They had heard his words and walked with him, but had they truly sat at his feet as Mary had? Mary has left us a legacy to follow: will we sit at Jesus' feet and quietly listen for his directions and guidance? Will we throw ourselves at his feet when we are distressed with life or saddened by the loss of a loved one? Will we kneel at Jesus' feet in worship and anoint him with oil of sacrifice? Mary was always at the feet of Jesus; where will you be?
Lord Jesus, let us always be at your feet, seeking to learn from you, soaking up your every word. Guide us and lead us as only you can do. Help us to stay at your feet, knowing it is there that we will find not only truth, but also true comfort and joy. May we always express to you our deep appreciation by offering you the sacrifice of praise. May we worship you in word and in deed. Thank you for the simplicity of Mary's example; may we always be found at your feet like her. Amen
