Scratchboard

1. The subject of my creation is a beach with palm trees and a hammock as the sun is rising. My work was made by using scratching tools to scratch the positive spaces. I first gridded my work to make my scratchboard look proportional to my original image. I chose to create this because the image I chose had many values of black and white. I used value to show the positive and negative spaces that shows lightness and darkness. In my artwork I also used contrast where I showed black from white.

2. I used formal balance to balance the trees on the right from the trees on the left. My project evolved because I had to pay attention to the positive and negative space which made it hard to make everything proportional, which took a while. Also some parts of my scratchboard don't match the value of the original photo, so I had to change how hard I was scratching.

3. The meaning of my art is I am missing the beach so this makes me want to go. I want to go back to Florida where I took this photo. This relates to my life because the I love the beach and palm trees. I think my work could be stronger by matching my values from the original image to my artwork better. Also making everything more proportional and look more like the original image.
