Facing

The subject of my creation is a girl (which is actually me) who is looking ahead. my piece shows different colors, blended together to create values and contrast. I got feedback from my last piece to add color to my art, so I decided to add color to the face and hair, to make it stand out more, and show emphasis on the hair and face. This relates to my life due to the drawing is of me and I am showing an expression of myself.
I used oil pastels, on drawing paper. I took an image of myself in the light room to use a a reference for my piece. I used a tortellini to blend the oil pastel pencils, to match the colors on the image. I wanted to create the face and hair in color, while leaving every thing else dark, like the background. I chose to make the har purple to set emphasis on it, and most of my peers seemed to like it, because it was different and unique.
I used value in my artwork to show the areas where there are darker and lighter tones. I also showed emphasis by making the facial expressions and the hair the focal point. At first I thought the oil pastel pencils would be easy to use, but found out they were actually really hard to use. I forgot to erase most of the pencil marks, thinking they would get covered by the oil pastel, although you could still see them through the oil pastel and when I tried to erase them, they would not come off. My next steps in this project would be to push some of my lighter values more, especially on the face and also try to make the pencil marks less noticeable.
