"Friends"

12"x9"

The subject of my creation is a portrait of my cousin and I. I chose to create this because the I wanted to use charcoal and ink in this project because its my favorite material. I have not done a portrait in a log time and wanted to see how it would look if I did one.

I made this piece by first drawing both faces with a 6B pencil, then going back in with a charcoal and the charcoal pencil, giving it values. I did this project square by square, so I didn't mess up the proportions. I had to keep going over the charcoal to make the values darker and darker.

Throughout this project, I used value and contrast by experimenting with black and white tones. There is a clear contrast between the lighter gray shades and the darker gray/black areas. Before I started I was thinking about doing a burning earth, but I chose to add eyes, showing how it is effecting people. I chose to give the earth and fire color because that is the main focus of my piece. My next step in this project would be to continue to work on blending the earth with the fire.
