Sculpture #2

The subject of my creation is a portrait of one of my good friends made with paper. There is also a frame around the portrait to make it more 3D. I did the background using dark blue paper to highlight the face. I used cardboard to glue on pieces of paper, specifically cutting the right shapes and the right color to create the face. Then I used nails and string to make a frame, so it looks like a picture frame. I chose to create this because I wanted to make a portrait of him, although I was not sure what materials to use at first. In my artwork I used texture with the paper and nails to add depth and 3D to my piece. Contrast is also shown in my artwork through the values of blue. I used light blue to highlight his face and fill in the positive spaces, so I used dark blue to fill in the negative spaces.

One composition rule and technique showed throughout my work is framing. I showed framing by using nails and string to make a frame, like a border. I like how it looks like a picture frame with the photo inside. When I started this project I had no idea what material I wanted to use, but after constantly thinking about it I decided to use paper, specifically blue because that's his favorite color. I didn't want to use paper because it doesn't show the 3D aspects. Although by adding nails and string I made it more 3D, and it turned out better than I thought.

The meaning behind my artwork was to use any material of our choosing to create something that relates to the project being created. This means that I chose someone I cared about and made it with his favorite color. This relates to my life because I was experimenting with different materials to see how to use them and if I like them. I was also not sure what material to use for the border and his mom helped me with that process of determining what to use. I think my artwork could be stronger by making the nose and eyes more proportional the actual image.
