Duck Stamp

Mallard

9"x11"

The subject of my creation are two mallard ducks, one female and one male. The setting in my artwork in a pond with flowing water. I chose to create this because I like the look of wood ducks and the colors presented. I used color in the ducks to show their bright colors. I also used movement in the background to show the water and waves.

I created this by printing images of mallard ducks then I used these images as references, and drew the ducks with pencil first, then I used acrylic, water color and colored pencils for rest of the painting. Throughout my artwork I used selective focus with colors to make the ducks stand out more. For example, on the male wood duck the bold colors make the duck stand out more, and the shadows are hidden more with the lighter colors and less details. I started off just drawing the female wood duck, but I wanted to add a male duck to give it more composition and make it more appealing.

The meaning behind my artwork is to show the importance of birds and how beautiful they are. I chose mallard ducks because they’re beautiful birds and I was drawn to the males unique colors. last year won second place with my wood duck painting, so I wanted to do a different duck similar in colors. I think next time I could be more precise with the female duck female duck.
