Spheres

The assignment was to create three different pinch pots that resemble something man-made, made by nature and some sort of design. The subject of my creation is a flower, roads with a bridge and lastly a zentangle design. I made my project by first using the pinch technique. I pinched the inside of one ball in a circular motion to create a pot, the I did that with another ball of clay about the same size. Next I slip and scored them together. I made 3 pinch pots before I started working on my design. I used clay tools to make all the designs on my pinch pots. Then I did the first firing. Lastly I glazed my flower with blue, yellow and green Hf. I glazed my roads with golden and light blue, and my sgraffito with blue underglaze.

In my artwork I used color to figure out what glazes need more coats and what glazes look the best. I also used pattern in my all of my spheres by creating shapes in patterns. My flower and design spheres changed from my original design because at first I thought I was going to do hexagons for my design, but then I decided to do a zentangle design instead. I changed my flower because I was going to add seeds but I decided not to. Also I was not exactly sure what I was going to use for glazes but as I went I figured it out.

The meaning behind my artwork is that I created different pieces of nature and man made objects using clay. I used this to show meaningful objects in a way I think they look. I also love flowers so that's why I made one, also I didn't know what to do for manmade but I looked outside and thought of doing roads. This relates to my life because I am learning how to work with clay using the pinch pot method. As I continuously use clay I will get better at this skill. I proud of how the glaze on the flower looks, I feel like I used enough layers so it is completely covered. I also like how my sgraffito sphere looks because the designs and patterns look good together. I struggled with adding enough coats of glaze on my road sphere, because you can see through it. I also feel like some spots are not completely covered with glaze. Next time I would make sure to have a good three coats of evenly distributed glaze to all of my pinch pots. Also next time I will try to be as careful as I can as to where I wanted to paint the glaze.
