Concentration #5

The subject of my creation is an owl made of paint chips, newspaper, magazine cutouts and a log. The setting of my creation is on a log, I tried to make it look like the owl is in its own habitat. I made this by first using newspaper to roll up to make the body. I then used paint chips to hot glue them on the body and magazine cutouts to glue on the head. I chose to create this because I wanted to use materials I haven't used yet in my previous projects. I used color in my project, so I had a variety of different shades. This shows the different feather colors on an owl. Another element I used in my project was pattern in feathers by overlapping them consistently throughout the owl.

One composition rule and technique shown in my artwork is informal balance by putting the owl specifically on the left side of the wood. I did this so it wasn't directly in the middle of the wood. For my last concentration I was stuck on what to do, so then I thought of doing an assemblage of different materials and overlapping them. I got this idea from the foundation of art students because they were doing an assemblage project. I first started with a large body and wings with newspaper, but then I noticed it take extra long to put the paint chips on, so I decided to take the newspaper out and make the body smaller. My original vision for the legs was going to be made out of wire and attached to the body, but the wire was unsteady and didn't hold up the owl. Then I thought about using a base they would be on, and came up with wood.

The meaning behind my artwork is to show my concentration of owls and patterns, within owls. I used wood to complement the owl and where it may be found in nature. This relates to my life because it was my last project in 3D and it took me back to last year when I did this project in foundations and made a flamingo. I think my artwork could be stronger by making the colors blend better, making less noticeable glue spots and making the ears and head more realistic.
