We are Equal

"We are Equal"

Digital media, colored pencils

9"x 10"

The subject of my creation is are people who struggle with disabilities standing next to each other smiling. I tried to use many colors showing it doesn't matter about the color of your skin or if you struggle with disabilities, but that we are all equal and the same. My message I'm trying to show is nobody is better than you are. This competition is important because it shows how some people may feel secluded due to a disability that is out of their control and it brings attention to this topic. This relates to my life because the message I'm expressing means a lot to me and I want others to see this message as well. I chose to create this because I thought it would be interesting to used media and also wanted to use many colors. I showed line as well by using it online for the characters.

For this project, I used media on illustrator and drew the lines and text. Then I printed it out on a piece of watercolor paper. After that, I colored inside each person with colored pencils. Finally, in the background, I used watercolor to just fill in the white space. I also used a light purple color in the background to make the objects stand out more.

I used value to show the darker and lighter tones. I also showed contrast by making my objects stand out more from the lighter background. Your eyes are more drawn into the darker areas in my piece, like the people with disabilities, and the text. This gets my message across about what my artwork means. My project evolved throughout this project because I originally wanted to use media for the whole piece but I couldn't figure out how to use the fill tool in illustrator, so I instead colored the people in with colored pencil. Next time I want to use media for the whole piece and make the colored pencil marks look more even.
