Breathe

"Breathe"

5"x5"

The subject of my creation is the bottom half of my face, showing my nose and lips. My piece shows different values of blacks and whites, with red lips. I got feedback from my last piece to possibly use selective color to emphasis on different facial features, so I decided to add color only to the lips, to emphasis them. This relates to my life because this is a painting of myself and y lips are something that stands out on my face, because they are full.

I used acrylic paint, on drawing paper. I took an image of myself to use a a reference for my piece. I used larger paint brushes on the larger areas on y face and smaller paint brushes on my lips and nose. I challenged myself to use larger paintbrushes and less paint strokes, I wanted this painting to be more free than my other ones, and less realistic. I decided to use black and white paint to show grays and also make people focus on the lips.

I used value in my artwork to show the areas where there are darker and lighter tones. I also showed contrast by making the nose and lips the focal point. At first I thought this would be less realistic and more abstract, although it turned out to be more realistic than abstract. My next steps in this project would be to possibly either blend more or less to make it more or less realistic, especially on the face.
