Stars and Stripes

The subject of my creation are eyes with stars for the eye ring, and stripes across the background. The setting is wherever gracie took this photo of her eyes. I made this by first using the grid method to draw out the eyes, so they look proportional to the actual image. Then I used charcoal, and ink to actually draw the eyes. Lastly I painted blue in the eyes, with white stars and red stripes across the background. I chose to create this because in this project you had to add stars and stripes somewhere in your drawing, and this came to mind. I used value and contrast to highlight and darken different parts, to make my project look more like an eye. I did this around the eyes and nose.

One composition rule and technique shown in my art is rule of thirds, this is shown by specifically drawing the eyes and not any other facial features. I separated the second row from the first by drawing different things. At first I thought about doing a drawing of one side of a face with stripes and the other half stars, but then I thought of just doing eyes because I it would look cool zoomed in.

The meaning behind my artwork is that I created something using the patterns and designs from the american flag and assembling them in a different order. I was trying to have the eyes see the stars, like the stars are the reflection. This relates to my life because the eyes are trying to show the message of the flag in a way. I think my artwork could be stronger in some areas like the eyebrows are off in value a little and proportion.
