Concentration #2

The subject of my creation is a clay bowl with an owl carved in the middle. The setting is the owl is sitting on the branch in the dark woods. The work was made by first making a clay slab, then I put it on a piece of circle cut out styrofoam to make it the shape of a bowl. On the bottom of the bowl I put fish net on the bottom to make a cool design on the bottom. I then left it to dry, so then I could paint black underglaze on the top and pink on the bottom. After I applied 3 even coats of underglaze and carved out my design with sgraffito tools on the inside of the bowl. I chose to create this because my concentration is owls and designs, so I added pattern on the outside of the bowl, with the lines, representing a border. I also used line by carving out lines in the white space and leaving behind the negative space.

One composition rule and technique that is shown in my artwork is framing. I used this by carving the outside into a pattern and leaving the black on the outside. The frame helps to show the focal point in my artwork, which is the owl. My project evolved over the course of this project because the underglaze kept getting shipped, so I had to paint it back with more underglaze or make it into something else. When I was carving out my project the 4 feet on the bottom of the bowl fell of, this meant that I couldn't but clear glaze on the bottom. This project also took me awhile to do this project, causing me to make other projects in between.

The meaning of my artwork is what I’m trying to focus on, while doing my concentration. I showed patterns and an owl because those two things are the main ideas of my concentration. This relates to my life because I enjoy owls and I wanted to show others their beauty by presenting them in my art. In the future my artwork could be stronger by adding more leaves to show pattern. Also I feel like I could improve on the way I shaped the clay by making the outsides of the bowl more clean and smooth.
