Seagull

"Seagull"

Water color and Acrylic

10"x8"

The subject of my creation is a seagull, which shows different layers, creating more depth on the bird. I followed my concentration by creating a Maine bird, which in this case is a seagull. I love the beach and seagulls are an important part of beaches, so I decided to paint one. I showed the beauty in the water and in the bird by showing the feathers and light colors, which is part of my concentration.

To make this piece, I started by lightly drawing the seagull. Then I used watercolor in the background to create water, I mixed different watercolors to create a variety of values. The I used acrylic paint, specifically, yellow, white, black and red to created the layers of feathers and the dark black and grey wings. I used a medium sized paint brush, which allows me to paint more free, than neat.

Throughout this project, I used color. I did this by making the background darker than the foreground, which is the seagull. I also used contrast, by layering acrylic paint to create feathers and a variety of shades on the bird. The dark back ground and gives more attention to the seagull, which I was trying to focus on in this piece. In this process, I didn't have the right paper for water color, so the paper dissolved with more water added, which made the background hard to paint. My next steps in this piece would be to make the background more concise and look more like water. I also want to keep layering paint on the bird and add legs and shadows.
