Chickadee

"Chickadee"

Acrylic

8” x 10”

The subject of my creation is a painting of a chickadee, showing different colors within the bird and background. My inquiry question that I'm focusing on throughout the year is, “how can I show the beauty in birds through shape and color,” so by adding bright colorful colors to the background I am showing the color aspect in my inquiry question. I wanted to paint a chickadee because it is the "Maine" bird. Throughout my concentration, I want to try to focus on Maine birds because I admire their beauty.

I used Bristol paper for this painting. I taped the border with painters tape, making sure the border would be clean. I started by painting the background first with acrylic paints. I used a larger paint brush to cover large areas of space, like the bright green background and the bushes occupying the bottom. Then I painted the tree branches with smaller paint brushes, adding more values. Then I panted a chickadee sitting on the branch looking off into the distance.

I used color in my artwork to express the birds beauty. Throughout the background and foreground, there are a variety of different colors shown. In my piece I also showed contrast by using lighter paint colors against darker paint colors. At first I wanted to create a background full of varies shapes of different colors, although this took the attention away from the bird, so I discarded that piece and created a new one. My next steps in this project would be to make the green in the background less bright and also add more shapes to make it connect with my concentration better.
