My overall experience so far in advanced studio art has been positive, it has allowed me to focus on my main idea rather than many different ideas. I challenged myself by taking this class due to the fact that I felt like I would be stuck on my concentration and not able to create 15 projects. I am caught up experimenting with the same materials and not connecting each piece with my sustained investigation, which I want to change next semester.

I have been successful with improving my pieces, and spending time on each project, showing my dedication. This has allowed me to realize how long each project should take and to plan accordingly for each project. Each project for my concentration had made me think about my composition and material. By taking this advise and critiques from other and adding it into my art, I am able to stronger my projects. The advise given helps me to see what I can add to future projects and what I need to work on.

I struggled most with sticking with my concentration. I have got to the point where I am bored with my inquiry question. This has made it hard to create pieces, when I am not interested in making them. This is a down side I have in this class, I get bored in each piece and am not happy making them. I tend to stick with the same thing and not try new ideas or materials, which is a struggle I have in this class. I think I could I need to add composition to each of my pieces to add depth to each project.

In the future I want to improve all my projects because I know I can do better on each one. I want to feel happy about each project I make, which will help me succeed in this class. I need to plan out what I need to get done in each class to be able to finish on time. Next semester I want to change my question and like the projects I am creating, rather than just doing it because it is an assignment. I'm going to change my inquiry question to stonger each assignment.

“Final Reflection.”

Summarize your learning in the class. What have you been most successful with? Why? What have you struggled with? Why? What are your artistic goals for the summer/future?

Advanced studio art is the most free art class I have taken, the structure of the class is solely based around your own ideas and materials of your choosing. Previous art classes have been more structured, in the sense that all the students would have to follow the same project with the similar materials. This is what I love most about this class, I have the chance to play with materials and only use the ones I work well with. I also get the freedom to choice my own path on all my projects, pushing my concentration even further. Although everyone was taking the same class, it felt as if each of us were in separate classes. everyones projects were extremely different from each other. The creativity and unique ideas everyone had in their own projects, inspired me throughout my concentration, this includes the media, material, and design. To push our creations even further and improve our pieces we used peer critiques. I have found that throughout my concentrations, each piece has been improved based off of things I could add in the future to connect my concentration connect with my question even more.

In advanced studio art, I have been most successful with keeping up with my artist statements and responding well on peer critiques. I think giving and receiving feedback is extremely important in art, so I like to take time to respond to others to show my appreciation for their hard work. This includes when we did peer critiques as a class, when we would either write our feedback or verbally discuss our artwork. This year was extremely confusing after transitioning to remote learning, we had to respond to everyones artwork. This was actually enjoyable for me, seeing all the artwork and how different everyone thinks. I have been able to keep up with them, even during remote learning. My artist statements are always completed on time, as well as many of my projects. I believe that organization is extremely important in being a successful art student, so making sure my projects and artist statements are done on time shows I can be successful in advanced studio art.

I have struggled with most this year in advanced studio art is following my concentration. My original question was how do animals express emotion through their facial expressions? Although half way through the year, when we got that chance to change our project, I decided to change my question to how can I show facial features through the use of emphasis? These questions are similar, although completely changed my outlook on art. I started to get bored and lazy on some of my projects. This made me not enjoy art. Although after switching my project to focus on humans, I enjoyed my creations more. I was able to expand on each one of my projects with my second question, where on my first question my projects were scattered. Another struggle I ran into was how much time I put into each piece. I found myself slacking off and not creating my best work at some points of the year, this includes over quarantine. When I don’t like what I am creating it doesn’t give me motivation to create more. This is why I started to not pay attention to my work and care for it as much. This weakness is hard to overcome, as I have always been put down by my work, if I am not creating the art pieces I love.

My artistic goals for the future/summer are to continue to work on projects that interest me. I want to experiment more with acrylics, as this was the main material I used this year. I think it is important to continue to work on making art outside of school to become more experience and keep improving as an artist. This summer I plan on following along with some art classes, as I have the past couple weeks. This has helped me because I can see other techniques artists use, that I can incorporate into my artwork. I have focused on matching values and angles, which I usually struggle with in my projects. I also like to make friend ship bracelets, so I could continue to make bracelets and eventually sell them.
