My overall experience of 3D was a positive one, it allowed me to look at art in a different way than I had before. I enjoyed going to each class, knowing that I was free with what I could make. I challenged myself by taking this class due to the fact that I felt like I would be caught thinking too much about incorporating 2D into my art, although that was not the case. After taking this class, I realized that 3D art takes time, skill and patience to master. I experimented with a variety of materials, which allowed me to see which materials I liked best. Going into 3D I was nervous because I hadn’t worked with this type of art before. I did ceramics in the first semester, but I was limited to using only clay, although with the variety of materials, it persuaded me to try new things. I had heard negative rumors about 3D from previous students who have taken it, although I would disagree with the rumors, it turned out better than I anticipated.

One material and process I like working with is clay because I had previously taken ceramics class and already knew the basics. I am most proud of my sgraffito clay animal and my sgraffito clay owl bowl, they both exemplified what I was trying to show in my art and with these projects. I was able to add design and pattern which I also wanted to focus on in this class. The process in which the clay has to stay moist and they dry and then be fired is fun because you never know what your final piece will look like until you take it out of the kiln. I also enjoyed the hand project, the process in which it is made I have never used before. You have to quickly stick your hand in a can of plaster and mold your hand, then you pour alginate into the plaster and it turns into your unique hand. One of the hardest projects in 3D was my sgraffito clay animal, although I did enjoy this project and it turned out well, it took a long time. I restarted the building of the clay animal many times before I eventually formed the body. Also while I sgraffito the owl I had to be extra careful to not break any pieces off the body or chip pieces off the underglaze, although in the end, all the feet came off, the nose, and one ear did as well.

In 3D I learned many things that helped me grow as an artist. It takes time and dedication to get the outcome you want, and with this in order to have a good outcome on my projects I have to give myself time on projects. Although we didn't do as many peer critiques as we did in 2D, they were still nice to have, so you receive feedback and suggestions on your art. This not only benefits me, but others around me who might be inspired by someone else's work. The peer critique helped me specifically on my sculpey owl because I had made the base out of cardboard, but someone suggested putting the owl on a frame, then using pinecones around the owl. I used this suggestion and it made my piece come together better than before. At the beginning of this class you can see that my projects did not require much thought or time, by the end my projects were more centralized and more time was put in. We can see the evolution of my projects by focusing more on the patterns and principles of owls, this is seen through the use of color, value, materials, presentation (etc).

I found myself repeating clay because I was most familiar and felt the most comfortable with it. I like using clay for project that we have more time on, although the process clay has to go through takes a long time. I also used sculpey, which I did not enjoy that much because it was hard to put together. I also repeated an owl in most of my projects, although owls ultimately turned out to be my concentration. There are many forms of art we see today, like paintings, drawings, ceramics, street art, melted glass (etc). These types of art can be categorized under 2D and 3D, which both classes I enjoyed. By looking at both 2D and 3D aspects of art, I think I've grown as an artist. Art has always been a topic I am interested in. From the previous art classes I've taken I can apply it to next year in advanced and even in the future. I now view the world from an artist perspective thinking about different elements and principles applied in different scenarios. In my future art world, I want to challenge myself more. My goal for next year in art is to show a meaningful message in my pieces along with strong composition.
