Last month I asked my friend from Dilnaz to share a cultural recipe for a comic in Gazeta. She graciously agreed, and the above comic details the national dish of Dilnaz’s home country Kazakhstan. Below is Dilnaz’s story of beshbarmak as illustrated above.
“Beshbarmak means “five fingers,” according to the most common translation. The name of the dish comes from the way it is eaten with your hands. In my family, preparing beshbarmak is a communal activity, with everyone contributing. Around the dastarkhan, where we share stories, laugh, and honor our elders—strengthening the bond between generations. This dish isn’t just food, it’s a reminder of our roots and the love that keeps us connected no matter where life takes us.”
