Max Barskih is a famous Ukrainian pop singer and songwriter who has built a musical career with his catchy love songs, smooth voice, and unique charisma. In addition to releasing six studio albums, his accomplishments include a variety of awards, ranging from being named GQ Russia’s 2018 “Male Musician of the Year” to receiving a Russian Golden Gramophone award four times.

Despite his current successes, Barskih came from humble beginnings. Max Barskih was born into what he regards as a dysfunctional family—he states that he prefers to forget many moments from his childhood, especially those involving his drunken and abusive father. Still, even in an unstable household, Barskih was inspired by music. At the age of 12, he wrote his first song, which was met with encouragement from his friends, mother, and siblings. His first real success came not long afterwards. When he turned 18, he successfully auditioned for the talent show “Star Factory.” He received attention for not only his voice, but also for his shocking entertainment value—from his sensual dance moves to the infamous act of self-harming on a live broadcast in the name of his unrequited love. In connection with the latter act, he was asked to leave the show, but his stunt ended up being a successful PR move. Barskih and Svetlana Lobodova, the object of his unrequited love, made headlines several times in the future with various performances and photoshoots. Barskih gained a major young fanbase and a reputation as a passionate performer.

Interestingly, Max Barskih was born Nikolai Bortnik. His stage name was created from the first name “Maxim,” which he had always admired, as well as the name of a Kiev bar—“Bar Sky”—whose sign accidentally caught his eye.

I’ve selected some lyrics from a song entitled Неземная (Unearthly), from Barskih’s album “7,” named after his lucky number. Representative of Barskih’s famous love songs, he passionately expresses his love for an “unearthly,” that is, heavenly and ethereal, woman.
