Unscrambled intro

Life presents each of us with many challenges. But sometimes when we focus too much on our own troubles, we forget that those around us carry burdens as well. Plato once said, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” In other words, we should assume that others are carrying a heavier load and be supportive to everyone. Two works of literature that explore the importance of compassion are “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst and “He Ain’t Heavy” by the Hollies. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, an older brother reflects on his childhood with his younger brother, remembering the choices he made. In “He Ain’t Heavy”, the speaker conveys his willingness to support his figurative brother, another human being. Using symbolism and diction, Hurst and The Hollies explore the idea that we should live our lives with compassion for others.
