First Chapter: Paraphrasing

Silas Marner is not an easy book. However, you don't need to understand every word in order to get Eliot's point. Read the first six paragraphs of the novel and find the sentences that match the paraphrased sentences below. You only need to write the first four words of the original sentence. Let's do the first one together:

1st paragraph: In those days, if you didn't know a man's family, you didn't trust him.

1st paragraph: Isolated from society, these people often took on strange characteristics.

2nd paragraph: When he realized they were there, he gave them a frightening stare.

2nd paragraph: Most everyday people, as a result of having to struggle to get by, see the world as a scary place rather than a place of happiness and possibility.

3rd paragraph: Because the town was so far from the main roads, it didn't get many visitors.

4th paragraph: Better to have him as a friend than an enemy.

5th paragraph: Although they were wary of him, they needed his cloth.

5th paragraph: People believed he had a lot of money stashed away.

6th paragraph: As a result of his religious beliefs, he didn't share his knowledge of plants with others because he suspected it might be immoral.
