Midterm points are broken down below:

20: Two reading passages, one fiction, one non-fiction

10: Literary tools: allusion, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, oxymoron, paradox, personification, symbolism, internal and external conflict, direct and indirect characterization, irony, exposition, inciting action, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, denouement, imagery - olfactory, visual, tactile, gustatory, auditory

10: Parts of speech and other grammatical terms (definitions and examples): All parts of speech, antecedents, transitive and intransitive verbs, subordinating conjunctions

8: Identifying various phrases: appositive, absolute, prepositional, participial, relative clauses, adverbial clauses

8: PSAT questions

14: More literature: themes, point of view, unreliable narrator, motif, The Catcher in the Rye, Kubler-Ross' 5 Stages of Grief, Erik Erikson's 8 Stages of Psycho-Social Development

30: Essay instructions:

Use the quote below to write a five paragraph essay about The Catcher in the Rye. Use the quote below in the intro. Your intro should follow the format we learned in class and conclude with a thesis and a road map. Your road map can consist of three elements. For example, you can focus on three conflicts or symbols or any variety of literary tools Salinger employs to make his point. The fifth paragraph should be a brief conclusion summing up your main points.

“Life doesn’t make any sense without interdependence. We need each other, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all” – Erik Erikson

Although there are no questions specifically on the vocabulary, I do use some of our vocabulary in the questions on the test. If I were you, I would study for this test by reviewing the grammar, including parts of speech and the phrases. I would review the worksheet on literary tools which I gave you at the beginning of the year. I would also look for PSAT practice questions online, I would make sure I know the format for writing an introduction and MEAL.
