Old Sidewalks

I like old sidewalks. Our old sidewalks record our history. The cement dissolves from between the little rock. The tops wear off the little rocks.  The black city gunk gets stuck to the surface of the concrete. Every section cracks. A few sections get crushed into shallow potholes. Sidewalk area around trees heave. Some section develop  couple inch tall cliffs along the cracks. Occasionally, a section of concrete turns into a mini teeder toddler. When you walk across the  slab, the concrete tips . I look foreword to tipping the slab with each trip.

Problem is, Old concrete is dangerous. The cracks and cliffs are called "tripping hazards". If you are paying attention, you don't trip. Problem is, you have to pay attention every single time. You let your mind wander just once and you trip. You can be hurt. You can be injured. A few people die.  You must never forget that an old sidewalk is an unsafe sidewalk.

I like old sidewalks. I also like people. When the danger of an old sidewalk becomes too dangerous, you need to replace the old sidewalk with new sidewalk. This is not erasing your history, it's opening up a new chapter
