Petty Theft Auto

In several ways, stealing a car is worse than sealing a horse. In a car, you have more range and speed than any horse. You also can't run over people with your horse. I understand why stealing a car is grand theft. However, some cars aren't that grand. Some cars are more trouble than they're worth. Some cars would only be valuable if they had your kid in the back seat. Perhaps we should create a category of crime for cars that just aren't worth much of anything. We should create the crime of petty theft auto for cars that are more valuable as junk.

Ground Rules

  • The car must be valued less than the average loan payment for a new car
  • The car must be at least 25 years old, the age at which you can import just about anything
  • The car must be visibly scarred from deterioration and/or collision
  • This damage must have occurred before the car was stolen
