Historic Preservation

Historic landmarks are great

Landmarks are a token of our history that a local community can share. Landmarks are pieces of public art to show off to visitors. At the very least, landmarks are "land marks". They are giant road signs. In a modern era of look alike buildings, landmarks are physical indicators that you didn't accidentally wander into the wrong city

However

Historic landmarks sometimes make lousy business sites. My favorite comment about historic landmarks is that they are businesses that everyone loves, but never visits. These are not businesses, these are keepsakes.

If a landmark is important enough to you to preserve, the landmark is important enough for you to help pay for. Tell your local government that you are willing to pay your share of purchasing your favorite landmark. Otherwise, we should let the owner of a landmark do with them what the owners want. That's only fair
