Governors Running for President

A long time ago in the land of Seward's Folly (Alaska), people found oil. Trouble is, they didn't own the land. The state of Alaska owned the land. So, they the oil companies paid the State of Alaska for the oil. And yes, I know that requiring oil companies to pay for the oil that they pump from public land that is owned by the American people is highway robbery, but that's just life.

The government of the State of Alaska had many ideas for their oil royalties. They dreamed of programs and construction projects and subsidies. Then a simple person hatched a simple plan, "let's just divide the money equally and cut out the government". And so, The permanent Alaska Dividend fund was born.

The trouble is that Alaska is a Republican state that is also a welfare state. Now imagine a Governor of Alaska running for president. She has to explain why she is running against the welfare state when, as governor, she ran a successful welfare state. She should tell the truth. She needed a job and if you want to work for the state of Alaska, you have to support the dividend fund.

You see, this is why so many politicians are lawyers. They are used to advocating for the interests of their clients. When the governor changes their position to run for president, people accuse them of flip-flopping. They are not, they are working for the interests of their new client, The United States of America. These candidates for president need to say so
