🍁Happy Fall!🍂
This week we continued our unit on addition and subtraction to 20. We will have been learning that the = sign shows that both sides of an equation are the same. We will also be working to find the unknown in an equation as well as continuing to solve story problems by using a variety of strategies. We are practicing verbalizing how and why we choose a strategy. "I chose to use _____________ because________." When talking with your child you can ask how they solve problems and why they choose certain strategies. Verbalizing helps them with written expression.
In reading, we practiced making connections to a text. We learned about making connections to ourself, another text, or to the world. We also continues to practice retelling a story. When you read with your child each night, ask them to retell the story in their own words, making it as concise as possible. Next week we will start module 3 and pretest the module's high frequency words. These are in the family letter that is in our newsletter at the beginning of each module.
We are continuing to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journal writing. Each day, students write in a journal and illustrate the story. Sometimes finding a topic can be a challenge for some, so they may appreciate talking with a parent or family member about some possible topics. Many of them write about a vacation, party, sports game or practice, movie night or other family event. We focus on proper usage of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and meaningful ideas that follow the same story line.
In social studies, our community unit is continuing with learning on being part of a community and authority figures in the community.
In science we learned about how the presence or absence of heat can change an object.
Last Wednesday, students had fun learning about the Texas cotton industry. We took a live, virtual field trip to El Campo, where we saw how cotton is harvested, transported, cleaned and sold for a variety of things. We also learned that our U.S. currency notes are made from cotton!
We also had our vision and hearing screenings and did a fun activity with the book "Carla's Glasses". Students made their own creative glasses and compared characters from the text.
