Mrs. Spence and Mrs. Welch
This week 4th grade students will be taking their beginning-of-year i-Ready diagnostic assessment in Reading. Please refrain from absences and/or appointments at this time, if possible. Below are the dates for the assessment:
Thursday August 28th & Friday August 29th - 4th grade Reading
We understand that students sometimes have appointments during the school day. We've had a few parents ask what the best time is based on our schedule, so we thought we would share with you all:
10:20 - 12:45 would be a perfect time frame for students to be pulled for appointments. During this time, we have specials, recess, lunch and then GatorAID (enrichment & intervention).
From 7:40 - 10:20 each morning and 12:45 until dismissal each afternoon, students will miss class time if they are pulled (which we understand is sometimes unavoidable).
As you can imagine, fourth graders get hungry at school. Please pack one or two snacks for your child every day in their backpacks. Unfortunately, due to food allergies we are no longer allowed to provide snacks for the class. Thank you in advance for your help!
Please remind your child to take good care of them; carry with two hands, keep away from food, drinks etc. Each night we ask that you have a special place to charge the chromebooks and double check that they make it in your child's backpack in the morning. We will talk to the students about how it is their responsibility, but please help them for the first couple weeks.

Students will be working with Canvas beginning next week. Many may have previous experience if they used it in 3rd grade but we will work to help them become more familiar with the platform in the coming weeks.
We suggest you use the pairing feature in Canvas, which allows you to "observe" your child's classes to see their daily lessons and assignments, and allows you to see what they have or have not turned in. We have placed a link below that will show you how to become an "observer" in your child's Canvas account.
Becoming a Parent Observer in Canvas
We will be working with students on a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset this year. We will be encouraging students to become more growth-minded. To understand more about a growth mindset and a fixed mindset, please watch the video below.
We also recommend a wonderful book by Carol Dweck called Mindset. It is an easy read and describes the growth mindset vs. the fixed mindset in an understandable way. We will be working throughout the year on building your child's growth mindset. To learn more, watch the video below.
Do you struggle with coaching your child through his/her emotional intensities? The book entitled Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students: Helping Kids Cope with Explosive Feelings by Christine Fonseca provides examples of how to coach your child in these situations. The book is approachable as it is free of educator jargon, offers easy-to-implement ideas, and is a relatively quick read. Although it doesn’t provide the magic wand we’d all love, we would recommend this book to anyone wanting some additional information/ideas for these situations.
Are you a parent looking to stay informed about your child’s technology use at school and home? Then you want to attend GCISD’s Parent Tech Academy at 6 p.m., Tuesday, August 26, on Webex.
