We have started our addition and subtraction unit! Students are learning a variety of strategies to help them understand and solve problems with confidence. These include using a number line, creating strip diagrams, solving word problems, and using the standard algorithm. Mathematical Art (K-12)
Children can begin to understand the connection between math and art through everyday conversations at home and in school. In our Mathematical Art activity, we highlight different forms of art and share examples of how to connect the art to mathematical concepts. For example, you can analyze a piece of art by looking for shapes like triangles and making connections to the classifications of the triangles you see. You can ask, "What are the characteristics of the triangles?" You can identify shapes and their area to notice the fraction or percent of the piece that is in different shades of color. You can bring in "Ish" ideas and ask, "What fraction-ish of the painting is yellow? Convince me.”  Math conversations showing how math can be seen inside of art are a valuable way to see maths in the world around us.
