This week in first grade we began our i-Ready math diagnostic and reading literacy tasks. In the literacy tasks, students read a list of nonsense words to demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge of phonics. We tested our first 2 modules of decodable high frequency words. Students will have individualized lists for practice over the coming weeks. Next week first graders will complete their reading i-Ready diagnostic and continue to practice routines as we prepare to begin small group instruction.
In math we have been collecting, sorting and organizing data. We formulated questions and observations about data sets organized in graphs. Next week we will begin our unit on addition and subtraction to 10 and then 20. During this unit students will be combining, separating, solving for unknowns and applying those skills to word problems. We will also focus on fact fluency to develop automaticity.
We have also learned about communities this week, which has been a great opportunity to discuss the different communities we share. Building a sense classroom community is a wonderful way to start the year with a new class.
This week students visited the library and checked out books. Classes visit the library the same day each week for a lesson, check out time and occasionally Maker Space activities.
