Everyone should have received iReady reports Friday. Teachers emailed an iReady letter explaining how to interpret results if needed. We will be scheduling fall conferences to review the results and share your child's progress thus far. As always, please contact your child's teacher with any questions or concerns.
Friday, first graders completed their first TEKS check (assessment) in math. We will continue our unit on addition and subtraction but will move to 20 in the next few weeks. We will be learning that the = sign shows that both sides of an equation are the same. We will also be working to find the unknown in an equation as well as continuing to solve story problems by using a variety of strategies. We are practicing verbalizing how and why we choose a strategy. "I chose to use _____________ because________." When talking with your child you can ask how they solve problems and why they choose certain strategies. Verbalizing helps them with written expression.
In reading, we read informational texts and discussed things we learned and thought were interesting. This week we will be focusing on summarizing texts. One of the things first graders work on is making connections to texts through life experiences. They enjoy reading texts, discussing the characters or information while making connections to their own experiences. It's an effective tool for practicing comprehension as well as vocabulary study.
We are continuing to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journal writing. Each day, students write in a journal and illustrate the story. Sometimes finding a topic can be a challenge for some, so they may appreciate talking with a parent or family member about some possible topics. Many of them write about a vacation, party, sports game or practice, movie night or other family event. We focus on proper usage of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and meaningful ideas that follow the same story line.
In social studies, our community unit is continuing with learning on being part of a community and authority figures in the community. Students enjoyed a visit from Officer Romero who shared her role in our school and our community. She is an important authority figure for us all, and we are grateful to have her on our campus. Officer Romero works hard to build strong relationships with our Gators and know each one of them.
Our science unit on objects and materials continues through early October. We will learn about classifying objects, sorting by characteristics, weight, systems and how things can be changed by heating and cooling.
