Science Water Tower Challenge
A couple of weeks ago, students were presented with a challenge: design a new water tower for the City of Grapevine that could hold a cup of water 30 cm high. Students planned, chose their tools and went to work! These are some of the designs that were successful!
Lunch with a Loved One is Thursday, October 9 from 11-11:30. This event is simply a way for parents or other family members to enjoy lunch with their student at school!
If you're bringing a lunch for your child, please make sure to let them know ahead of time so they don't accidentally buy lunch. Students are still able to buy lunch from the cafeteria if you'd prefer!
We'd recommend bringing blankets/ folding chairs, and arriving 5-10 minutes early to get a parking spot and your badge sticker by the front doors or at the kiosk. All guests will need to have a badge sticker on. I'd highly recommend completing this form ahead of time so your badge is pre-printed and ready when you arrive!
FRIENDLY REMINDER
Parents, please make sure your child comes to school each day with their Chromebook fully charged and ready to use. Chromebooks are an important part of our daily learning, and having them charged helps us start the day smoothly. Thank you for your support!

We have started our addition and subtraction unit! Students are learning a variety of strategies to help them understand and solve problems with confidence. These include using a number line, creating strip diagrams, solving word problems, and using the standard algorithm. To support you at home, here are some short videos that explain the strategies your child has been taught:

I hope these resources make it easier for you to see how your child is learning math this year!
If you’re looking for additional ways to support your child's math learning, we have some free resources for you! Here are sone simple, creative ideas for supporting your chid's growth mindset and exploring mathematics at home. You can always visit parent resources on youcubed. We have also highlighted some of the resources below.
Mathematical Art (K-12)
Children can begin to understand the connection between math and art through everyday conversations at home and in school. In our Mathematical Art activity, we highlight different forms of art and share examples of how to connect the art to mathematical concepts. For example, you can analyze a piece of art by looking for shapes like triangles and making connections to the classifications of the triangles you see. You can ask, "What are the characteristics of the triangles?" You can identify shapes and their area to notice the fraction or percent of the piece that is in different shades of color. You can bring in "Ish" ideas and ask, "What fraction-ish of the painting is yellow? Convince me.” Math conversations showing how math can be seen inside of art are a valuable way to see maths in the world around us.
Halving - Maths and Art
In our Halving task, we highlight a common misconception—that equal parts of a whole must always be connected. This lesson helps children see that halves can take many forms, while also encouraging creativity through art. Explore the task here: Halving – Maths and Art
Advice for parents/guardians - in English and Spanish
This short guide offers parents & guardians 6 important tips to help children become positive, happy mathematicians
Youcubed at Home
Youcubed at Home offers engaging math activities designed for families to try together. Each task includes a video introduction and often an example of how you can engage with your child. These activities help children notice and enjoy the math that is all around them.
Free Online Course: How to Learn Math for Students (English & Spanish)
How to Learn Math for Students has reached over 1 million participants worldwide! With 5 short lessons, the course helps parents understand the most important approach to mathematics and helps them know how to support their own children. It is also a powerful course for students to develop a growth mindset and a positive approach to mathematics problems—research has shown that it results in students’ higher achievement and engagement in math class.
New Film sharing the value of conceptual mathematics
This 1-minute film highlights the value of conceptual mathematics for all students - including those who have learning differences. Educators are finding it valuable to share with students, parents and other teachers.
Indigenous Maths & Art
Another wonderful way to explore math at home is through art. Our Indigenous Mathematical Art page features artwork and stories from artists around the world, helping students see mathematics in patterns, designs, and cultural traditions.
We hope these resources spark conversations and inspire joyful mathematics moments at home.Interested in Number Sense Intervention? Join us online on October 1 & 2. All registrants receive our number sense intervention activities used in the study.
