🍁Happy Fall tomorrow🍂
This week we continued our unit on addition and subtraction to 20. We will have been learning that the = sign shows that both sides of an equation are the same. We will also be working to find the unknown in an equation as well as continuing to solve story problems by using a variety of strategies. We are practicing verbalizing how and why we choose a strategy. "I chose to use _____________ because________." When talking with your child you can ask how they solve problems and why they choose certain strategies. Verbalizing helps them with written expression.
In reading, we practiced summarizing a story with a story map and retelling in our own words. Reading the homework books helps with this skill also. When you read with your child each night, ask them to retell the story in their own words, making it as concise as possible. Next week we will finish Module 2 and pretest the next module's high frequency words. These are in the family letter that is in our newsletter at the beginning of each module.
We are continuing to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journal writing. Each day, students write in a journal and illustrate the story. Sometimes finding a topic can be a challenge for some, so they may appreciate talking with a parent or family member about some possible topics. Many of them write about a vacation, party, sports game or practice, movie night or other family event. We focus on proper usage of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and meaningful ideas that follow the same story line.
In social studies, our community unit is continuing with learning on being part of a community and authority figures in the community. Students enjoyed a visit from Officer Romero who shared her role in our school and our community. She is an important authority figure for us all, and we are grateful to have her on our campus. Officer Romero works hard to build strong relationships with our Gators and know each one of them.
In science we learned about how heat can change things. We experimented with crayons and how they respond to heat and then the absence of heat.
