Fifth ASPIRE News

We are celebrating International Dot Day on Monday of next week. Dot Day is celebrated worldwide and originated from the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds. The book encourages students to think outside of the box as well as to persevere through struggle. We will be reading the book to students on Monday (as well as discussing the theme) and encourage students to wear clothing with dots to school if they would like.

Curriculum

5th Grade Math

• I can multiply one-digit, two-digit, and three-digit factors using several different strategies including the standard algorithm, partial products, box method, and lattice method.
  
  

6th Accelerated Math

• I can I can use benchmark fractions and percents to solve percent problems, and will represent the problems with strip diagrams and double number lines.  

• I can generate equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents.

• I can use the symbols <, >, or = to represent the comparison of fractions and decimals.

• I can compare and order rational numbers. 

ELAR

• I can synthesize information from texts to create new understanding.

• I can use text and graphic features to help me deepen my comprehension of a variety of texts.

• I can identify different parts of speech in various texts (verbs, including irregular, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, etc) and use them consistently and correctly in my writing.

Science 

• I can use what I know about density to build a barge out of specific materials that can hold as many pennies as possible.

Social Studies

• I can identify and locate the states and capitals of the Northeast region on a map.

• I can find and describe the states, climate, landforms, bodies of water, and natural resources of a specific U.S. region.

• I can explain how the geography and features of a region affect the way people live, work, and interact with others, and how other regions or countries see this region.

We’ve introduced our students to Gardner's idea of Multiple Intelligences through "Zones of Genius," helping them understand that everyone has all kinds of intelligences inside them—like musical, logical, or interpersonal—but some are stronger than others and can be developed over time.
