This Thursday, November 20, we will be visiting The Perot Museum for our field trip. Each class will have parent chaperones with an assigned group of students. The students will stay with the group to explore the museum and eat lunch. Any parents who are not able to commit to the day but want to meet us there are welcome. We ask that you not leave the group and just walk along, so that the chaperones are able to keep track of their assigned groups. We will not be shopping in the gift shop, so please do not send money with your child. Students should bring a 100% disposable lunch. Chaperones will manage lunches until we eat but will not be keeping up with water bottles or non disposable containers. We will leave Glenhope at 9:00 AM and return to Glenhope around 2:00 PM. Please have your child wear the PTA provided field trip shirt that was sent home earlier in the year. *Image below*
During conferences we have had several parents request classroom Amazon wishlists. It is so kind to ask what things we may need to enrich learning and/or replenish things used frequently. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.
Next week we will finish our unit on data analysis and graphing. We will continue to practict fact fluency throughout the year. Developing automaticity with facts is an important skill as students move to older grades. Upcoming units in math are Geometry and Number Sense/Place Value
This week we will begin Module 5 in HMH. This last week was a review week of skills from Module 4 and prior weeks. I looked at the curriculum calendar and missed the dates. Sorry for that! The Parent Letter for Module 5 is below.
We are continuing to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journals. Each day, students write in a journal and illustrate the story. Sometimes finding a topic can be a challenge for some, so they may appreciate talking with a parent or family member about some possible topics. Many of them write about a vacation, party, sports game or practice, movie night or other family event. We focus on proper usage of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and meaningful ideas that follow the same story line. We encourage them to use materials in the room as well as their resources to find proper spelling of words. During reading groups, students work on writing skills by retelling stories through written expression.
In social studies we will begin learning about holidays and traditions. If you have a special family tradition, custom or holiday your family recognizes, please let your child's teacher know. We would love to include learning about everyone's family celebrations.
Family and community traditions and customs reflect cultural heritage.
What are some important traditions and customs practiced in the community?
Why do families and communities have traditions?
How do folktales and legends reflect the cultural heritage of a community?
In science we will begin learning about living and nonliving things.
living things have needs and produce young, while nonliving things do not have needs and do not produce young.
living things get what they need from their environment. They depend on and interact with nonliving things to fill their needs for water, space, air, and sunlight. They also depend on and interact with other living things to fulfill their needs.
most food chains begin with the sun. Some living things get the energy they need from the sun, and other living things get the energy they need by eating other living things, as part of a food chain.
