Grief - Relief from

Daughter’s death

A patient of my daughter Padma Sripada M.D said to her 'Focusing on breathing’ helped me tremendously.

"Seven years ago, I lost my daughter and I went into a deep depression and chronic anxiety in spite of medications. I started practicing the breathing techniques and I got to say they were very helpful. For the first time in 7 years, I feel my depression has lifted.”

Grandmother’s death

A boy in his teens was living with his single mother (who was the secretary in my department) and his grandmother. He was very fond of his grandmother who cooked his favorite dishes and pocket money. She died due to illness in old age.

The boy got terribly upset by her absence and started neglecting his studies. When his mother put pressure on him about his lagging in his studies, he tried to injure himself with a broken Coke bottle. His mother shared the problem with me with distress.

On my suggestion, she stopped pressurizing him and made him practice 'counting breaths' before going to sleep.

She reported a lot of improvement in her son in about 3 months. He became receptive to her advices and took up the career of a musician using his talent for playing guitar and singing.
