It is estimated that more than 75% of all visits to a doctor are for stress-related complaints. Read about the causes and effects of stress in the following websites. I don't understand why health professionals don't prescribes “Stress reduction” along with the medicines, treatments and surgeries. You can get an idea about stress and its management from the resources on this page. 

From my personal experience and feedback from variety of practitioners of all ages, I believe 'focusing on breathing' practice, the way it is suggested in this website, is the simplest, no-cost solution for stress reduction and stress prevention. It works for all ages and cultures.
