--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The haiku are listed in order of total points received from voters. The numbers reflect the number of voters who gave the haiku either three points, two points, or one point -- followed by the total points for all votes.

Those who were given less than three points and who requested anonymity in such a case are so noted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the listing below, after each poem the author is listed, and then a three digit code revealing how many 3-point, 2-point, and 1-point points were cast for this poem by the other participating poets.

(2,1,4 = 12) would indicate that the poem above received two 3-point votes, one 2-point vote, and four 1-point votes.

RAINY SEASON

----------------------------------

First Place -  23 Points

----------------------------------

Ramona Linke

(3,3,8) = 23 pts

Second Place -   21 Points

----------------------------------

sound of rain-

i fold her last love letter

into a paper boat

-- Kashinath Karmakar

India

(3,2,8) = 21 pts

**Using the signifier of sound in the first line gets us to hear the sound of the letter being folded, albeit quietly, several times to make a boat. This has so much resonance, and would start an amazing scene in a film; novel; or short story.

----------------------------------

Third Place -   20 Points

----------------------------------

rainy season

the stream

changes its tune

Michele L. Harvey

New York, USA

(0,5,10) = 20 pts

**deceptively simple with (for this reader) some ominous undertones>

**Good ear.

 ----------------------------------

 19 Points

----------------------------------

first rain...

the silence fades

croak by croak

Vinay Leo R.

(2,0,13) = 19 pts

**"fades" is just a bit off, but in a rather interesting way.

 ----------------------------------

18  Points

----------------------------------

rainy season--

in his upturned hat five coins

and half-a-cup of sky

Alegria Imperial

(2,3,6) = 18 pts

**Really liked this one though I felt the preposition of ‘in’ starting off the second line wasn’t needed.

scent of rain...

the street darkens

umbrella by umbrella

Anonymous

(0,3,12) = 18 pts

**Although my first reaction, after loving this haiku, was to wonder about switching the last two lines around, I feel the writer has made the right decision. But either order of the lines would still make this a stunning

haiku.

** This would be more effective without the explicit reference to rain.

 ----------------------------------

 17 Points

----------------------------------

the different paths

raindrops on the window

Paul Hodder

(2,3,5) = 17 pts

 ----------------------------------

 16 Points

----------------------------------

rainy spring

the dog bowl fills

with snails

Collin Barber

(1,1,11) = 16 pts

**Sublime, and so very haiku. I feel joy every time I read this one!

**Line 3 is pleasantly unexpected, and it captures a phenomenon of the season.

spring rain---

all the things

I didn't plant

John Soules

(0,5,6) = 16 pts

 ----------------------------------

14  Points

----------------------------------

soft drizzle--

the car park full

of pink petals

Shrikaanth Krishnamurthy

Birmingham, UK

(1,2,7) = 14 pts

**A lovely picture, which shows so well how a haiku poet can find beauty in the ordinary scenes of life.

rainy season

the smell

of immovable horses

Oddbjørn Aardalen

(0,3,8) = 14 pts

**They can be immovable and combination of that feature and the rain pouring down, and the smell of the horses makes this a memorable haiku. I had run

out of points, so I hope this garners points from others.

 ----------------------------------

 13 Points

----------------------------------

summer rain

a toy boat bobs

in a pot-hole

Beverley George

(0,2,9) = 13 pts

**Wonderfully unexpected. I felt this was one of those haiku that could easily start a novel or a short story, a feature that I often look for in a haiku. I had run out of points, so I hope this garners points from others.

 ----------------------------------

 12 Points

----------------------------------

spring rain

the children kneel

before the worms

Ginny Hoyle

(1,2,5) = 12 pts

**A brilliant haiku because it has so many levels that can be read into this. Simple, deep, stunning.

rainy season

upriver a gypsy wagon

tied to a tree

Michael McClintock

(0,1,10) = 12 pts

**I really liked this one though felt squeezing in ‘upriver’ was one too

many things. I felt that the last two lines were good enough as “a gypsy wagon/tied to a tree”

**The rain has stopped even the Gypsies from wandering? I believe the word "Gypsy" has become borderline politically incorrect.

 ----------------------------------

 11 Points

----------------------------------

in the silence

after mid night rain

jasmine scent

Binnoo

India

(0,4,3) = 11 pts

**I like the play of the senses, but "midnight rain" is well short of a season.

**I like the way this uses the senses of both sound and smell -- very nice contrast.

10  Points

----------------------------------

Natalia Kuznetsova

Russia

(2,1,2) = 10 pts

of the bridge

Tomislav

(2,0,3) = 9 pts

three days of rain

the cat parts

the vertical blinds

DeVar

(0,1,7) = 9 pts

**Although not sure about two definite articles, I don’t think you could say “a cat/the vertical blinds” or “the cat/a vertical blind”. It’s brilliant, full of haiku humor that the old Haijinx magazine would

publish.

General Comments:

** Many fine kigo entries this time!

**Rain does not a rainy season make. Here are my votes in the May kigo category.

** General: Given the drought conditions in many areas, I'm surprised we didn't see more about rainy seasons without rain.

** I only considered those haiku which mentioned "rainy season" or similar (a specific season in certain parts of the world), and not those that just referred to heavy or occasional rain.

**Some pretty good haiku in this batch! Thanks again for this chance to read and be read, to vote and be voted on.

**This is another fine haiku within this kukai series. Sometimes adding a visual punctuation marker, especially an ellipsis, can seem posturing. Not here! It hits hard, on the button, on the nail, going back, whereever it is, or what it is. I’m already tensing up wondering what happens next. I’m not disappointed. Although there are no concrete images in the entire poem, there is, between the spaces and the silences, in the white space. Another one that could start a film; novel; or short story.

**A starry night conjures up a fine evening full of safety and comfort, but also the tragic artist of Van Gogh. How would someone know an abandoned dog returns thin, and returns to a home? I actually like the inconsistency that I personally experience. This may be both literal and allegorical, and where the prodigal son doesn’t come back to a successful life.

General Comments:

**The poems in this section are so good that it is very hard to evaluate. Every poem in a gem. However, I shall be guilty if I do not send my voting points.

**Ran out of points this month. I hate it when that happens, but it's an indication of the strength of the entries.

**Thank you once more for organising these fine collections!

**Wish I had more votes to spare. A really great bunch!!

**I found many of these to be filled with sadness and loss.

Thanks again, for your time and the opportunity

**This month raised many entries, as we are now at the end of the "long rains" season (March to May).

**this turned out to be more difficult for the students. They had only just returned to school from their Easter holidays and did not have the time to focus on both.

**Here is my offering for May's kigo, ( and we can only hope for rain to put out some of the local forest fires)

**I'm happy to participate again in this kukai. Thanks again for the invitation!

**This is, to me, a fascinating theme. I'm eager to see what participants do with it.

Thank you for participating in the May 2015 Kukai!
