FIRST CALM
----------------------------------
First Place - 22 Points
----------------------------------
first calm
carefully raking
the zen garden
Eduard TARA
(1,5,9) = 22 pts
**This would have been more effective without the adverb, and some sort of punctuation seems called for at the end of line 1.
----------------------------------
Second Place - 20 Points
----------------------------------
first calm
the newborn babe
finds his thumb
doris kasson
(0,4,12) = 20 pts
**Nice one, but would have been even nicer had the second line simply said: "the newborn."
----------------------------------
Third Place - 18 Points
----------------------------------
first calm -
shoveling the snowdrifts
by starlight
Ruth Powell
(1,2,11) = 18 pts
**The calm that comes with doing something
**Very meditative activity based haiku, a concise picture of nature and human nature interacting, beautifully crafted.

Tom Painting
(2,3,4) = 16 pts
still pond --
my rucksack emptied
of last year's stones
S.M. Abeles
(USA)
(2,3,4) = 16 pts
**I love the feeling of reverence and ritual captured in this poem, as well as the sense of a clean start, looking at the pond after all evidence of "last year's stones" has vanished. Lovely.
**This could either mean there is an opportunity to skip stones OR all the stones had been used before.
Nice double entendre.
----------------------------------
15 Points
----------------------------------
first calm-
a dangling branch touches
the tree's shadow
Rita Odeh
(1,2,8) = 15 pts
**This has a nice image. Although, I think it would be more effective as: first calm--/ a dangling branch touches/ its shadow.

General Comments:
**So much beautiful imagery, so few votes.
**There were images of calm and images of first, but relatively few successfully brought the two together.
**This was tough; it appears that many/most did not understand the assignment.
**Dear editors, thank you for making this kukai be a joyful haiku-meeting again.
**Again, happy new year! Have LOTS of calm!
**For the most part, I found that those haiku which used the phrase "first calm" were too obvious. Used as a first line it was like a title, telling the reader what to expect; used as a third line, it was a summary or explanation of what the reader had just read.
**Thank you for such a lovely topic.
**I enjoyed participating, thank you.
**This theme really brought out some fine work.
A real gift of the holidays is indeed the calm
that comes after . . . It's natural that poets
especially know this.
**Wishing you a very happy new year -- and hoping that the entries received in this first kukai of the year will add to your happiness! I found the kigo a pleasant challenge, even though it is not quite part of the Japanese kigo list...
