July 2012 Kukai

The Shiki Monthly Kukai

July 2012 Results

Dear Friends,

First an announcement:

After many years of hard work and dedicated service to the Shiki Kukai, with several co-secretaries, Jennie Townsend will be leaving after the Poet's Choice Kukai in October.  Since Robert Bauer is currently unable to help, we will be left with one secretary.  If any of you would be interested in helping as a co-secretary, please let us know.  The biggest requirement would be experience with Microsoft Excel.

And now...

Here are the results for the July 2012 Kukai, wherein our Kigo subject was TALK, and our Free Format subject was BLUE

Congratulations to *** RITA ODEH ***, winner of our Kigo section and to ***MICHAEL McCLINTOCK***, winner of our Free Format section!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The haiku are listed in order of total points received from voters. The numbers reflect the number of voters who gave the haiku either three points, two points, or one point -- followed by the total points for all votes.

Those who were given less than three points and who requested anonymity in such a case are so noted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the listing below, after each poem the author is listed, and then a three digit code revealing how many 3-point, 2-point, and 1-point points were cast for this poem by the other participating poets.

(2,1,4 = 12) would indicate that the poem above received two 3-point votes, one 2-point vote, and four 1-point votes.

VOTER'S comments are in italics below the respective poems.

General Comments:

**Not so many (my own included) poems with a real kigo in the kigo class. Maybe this needs to be stressed?

**It took so long to decide between those I'd shortlisted.

**here were so many different impressions and images left in my mind about talking etc..I wish I could have given all of the haiku poets points…

**Once again I narrowed it down to 12 haiku that I felt had equal merit and wanted 12 points!

**Some good haiku again, in this kukai. Thanks for the chance to read them

**I found some of the haiku I had not chosen here were in groups with some I have chosen and had to go back a weigh which was written in an engaging way... It's still hard to choose just 6.

**Thanks for a HOT KIGO!

General Comments:

**I wasn't crazy about any of the free format haiku this month, so I only have a couple of points to award.

**What a great set of submissions!! This is the first time I gave three poems equal votes.  I regret that I couldn't do the same for four more.

**After awhile the word blue itself became a hurdle to enjoying the haiku.... Although I did find some fine ones.

**Adding a general comment: a lot to choose from in both categories, a lot of good stuff. i haven't had such a hard time selecting the few to give my points to in quite a while.

**These rainy days make me very blue, and now it's tax time!!! I think I'll make this into a haiku.

**Thank you for making it possible to assemble so many fine haiku together in the one place.

Thank you for participating in the July 2012 Kukai!

There will be no kukai in August

We will announce the September 2012 Call for Submissions on Monday, September 3rd. See you then!

With much appreciation,

The Shiki Monthly Kukai Team
