Valentine's Grams
Every year on Valentine’s Day, there is a group of musicians that go around the school and sing songs to students that were given grams. During lunch, there is a stand where the songs can be paid for. Then in the week before Valentine's Day, they go from class to class and sing certain songs to students like love songs or funny songs.
These “grams” can be to a friend or a special person, and the songs they sing can vary depending on the person it is meant for. For example, for a friend, it would usually be a fun or comedic song that they would play, but for a partner, it would be a love song.
Some of the more popular songs were from Taylor Swift and Weezer. The group of musicians didn’t usually sing, but only played the instrumental part of the songs.
“The Valentine grams were pretty fun. Watching my friends get embarrassed in class was hilarious,” said Oliver Smiley, Junior at TRHS. This year, the grams were more of a fun thing among friends compared to the last couple of years when they were cute things couples would do.
Sometimes, however, grams don’t give the feeling they were intended to give. The grams were meant to be nice and fun, but for some introverts out there, it was extremely stressful to get one. Many students feel that there should be a confirmation from the student who is receiving the gram so that it isn’t uncomfortable for them. “Sometimes it can be embarrassing to receive a gram in a class where I don’t know anyone,” said Isabella Daniel, junior at TRHS. However, others believe that the surprise is part of the fun and that the student receiving the gram shouldn’t know about it until it happens.
Despite the disagreement on the students receiving the grams, everyone agrees that grams are an important part of Valentine's Day and should stay a part of Valentine's Day at TRHS.
