Bҽʂƚ Sƈαɾყ Mσʋιҽ Wιɳɳҽɾ: Friday the 13th
A group of college students decide to go camping in a secluded forest. Little do the teens know, they are camping right next to Camp Crystal Lake, a place where their worst nightmare lurks.
Personal Review: Friday the 13th is a classic slasher film, but I found it hard to enjoy. From someone who enjoys movies like Nightmare on Elms Street and Halloween, Friday the 13th is a movie that seems to lack interesting storytelling and an engaging plot.
ֆɛƈօռɖ քʟǟƈɛ: IT
A group of teens in the small town of Derry, Maine, encounter their worst nightmare after the mysterious death of Billy’s little brother. A group of misfits join together to fight a mysterious entity that appears every 27 years.
Personal Review: For one of the first horror movies I’ve seen, I enjoyed it.
I think IT was a great horror story. The filmmakers captured the same feel as the original movie.
Tԋιɾԃ Pʅαƈҽ: Saw
An unknown killer by the name of Jigsaw takes a group of non-assuming people and forces them into a game of life or death in which they have to right their wrongs. The game is played by multiple people at once, creating fear that leads to impulsive choices.
Personal Review: Watching Saw, one of the most classic and enjoyable horror movies of all time, was a wonderful and incredible experience. It's one of a very long line of movies and a great start to one of the greatest movie series of all time.
Fσυɾƚԋ Pʅαƈҽ: The Shining
Jack Torrance becomes the caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel during the winter. When he, his wife, and his young son settle into the hotel, Jack grows more and more insane.
Personal Review: If you enjoy a slow descent into madness over a total of two hours, then you’ll enjoy The Shining. In terms of camera work and editing, it’s a bit outdated but still enjoyable.
Fιϝƚԋ Pʅαƈҽ: The Silence of The Lambs
Jack Crawford sends the FBI training academy’s top student, Clarice Starling, to interrogate Hannibal Lecter. Jack believes Hannibal has insight into his newest case involving a killer who has a fascination with human skin.
Personal Review: Silence of the Lambs is one of the many movies that make up the genre of psychological horror. The interactions between Hannibal and Clarice steadily build up to create a slow dive into Clarice’s mental state.
Sιxƚԋ Pʅαƈҽ: Don’t Breathe
After a few novice criminals try to break into a blind veteran’s house, trying to steal his newly found fortune, they find themselves trapped in his house with no way out.
Personal Review: This movie was great at showcasing how many scares you can get with good sound design. It captures the aspect of silence in an empty space so well and does a perfect job at what it was meant to do.
Sҽʋҽɳƚԋ Pʅαƈҽ: The Purge Election Year
Once a year for twelve hours, anything and everything is legal. Normally, high-powered officials are protected. However, nobody is safe this year.
Personal Review: I personally enjoyed it. I liked watching the change-up from the previous movies and the new rules this time around. It was genuinely fun, and I loved watching it along with the long list of the previous Purge movies
Eιɠԋƚԋ Pʅαƈҽ: Nightmare on Elms Street
When Freddy Krueger starts terrorizing a group of young teenagers in their dreams, a young woman named Nancy starts to figure out the dark secret behind the killer.
Personal Review: If this is one of the first horror movies you see, you won’t be able to sleep at night. Nightmare on Elms Street plays on the fear of nightmares. Although the effects may seem outdated, it’s still a movie that will give you a good scare.
Nιɳƚԋ Pʅαƈҽ: Halloween
On Halloween night in 1963, Michael Myers killed his 17-year-old sister. Fifteen years later, babysitters start turning up dead on Halloween night. Could this be the work of the infamous Michael Myers?
Personal Review: Who doesn’t enjoy Michael Myers? This movie is one of the best horror movies because it pretty much kickstarts the slasher genre. Halloween is a classic horror movie that got me interested in the horror genre. For me, this movie wasn’t that scary, but it builds on your unease and finally ties itself together with a gripping end.
Lαʂƚ Pʅαƈҽ: Scream
After the murder of Sidney Prescott’s mother, a masked killer begins to terrorize the town. Little does Sidney know that the killer is closer to her than she thinks.
Personal Review: This is one of my favorites due to the take on horror and satire. Personally, I recommend this movie to anyone who hasn’t seen a horror movie before.
ɦօռօʀǟɮʟɛ ʍɛռȶɨօռֆ: Scary Movie
Scary Movie is a movie that pokes fun at many different movies like Scream, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project.
Personal Review: I really enjoyed this movie due to the many jokes and the satire that will make you forget you're watching a movie about other horror movies.
Hօռօʀǟɮʟɛ ʍɛռȶɨօռֆ: Texas Chainsaw Massacre:
When a pair of siblings find out that their grandfather’s grave has been vandalized, they set out with their friends to investigate. As they start to search, they take a detour to their family’s farm house. Upon figuring out who lives in the farmhouse, it becomes a race against time to survive.
Personal Review: When I saw this movie, it was one of the first times I had truly been scared by a horror movie. One of the elements that added to the scare factor is that Leatherface was based on the real-life serial killer Ed Gein. The two have many similarities, and if you know anything about serial killers, it adds a layer of unease and terror.
