The NFL Playoffs are underway and have been full of nail-biting, entertaining games. Wild Card weekend began on Jan 17, 2022 with six matchups. The weekend kicked off with the Bengals vs. Raiders; this was the closest game of the weekend, but the Bengals slipped away with a 26-19 victory over the Raiders due to a big game from rookie phenomenon Ja’Marr Chase. The following game was a division matchup between the Patriots and the Bills. The Bills clinched an early lead and continued to expand it the whole game resulting in a 47-17 victory over the Patriots.
Next, the mediocre Philadelphia Eagles led by Jalen Hurts clashed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers led by Tom Brady. This game ended as many expected with a 31-15 victory for Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.
The next NFC matchup was between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have only three playoff wins in the past 25 years and their drought continues as they lost to the 49ers by six points. The following game was Ben Roethlisberger's last game before retirement as the Pittsburgh Steelers matched up against the heavily favored Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately, Big Ben’s last game was a blowing loss as the Chiefs came out victorious with a 42-21 win over the Steelers. The final game of Wild Card Weekend was between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams in which the Rams won with a score of 34-11.
The following weekend came four wild Divisional Rounds games that were all last second, suspenseful finishes. The weekend began with the red hot Cincinnati Bengals going up against the number one seed Tennessee Titans who were accompanied by the returning Derrick Henry. Despite Henry’s return, Joe Burrow and the Bengals were able to pull off a 19-16 victory thanks to a game winning field goal by Evan McPherson. The other AFC divisional game was a shootout between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs who were both led by their star quarterbacks, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. Despite a record breaking, four touchdown game from Gabriel Davis the Buffalo Bills still fell short with a 36-42 overtime loss to Mahomes and the Chiefs. The next matchup was a 2020 NFC Championship Game rematch between the Green Bay Packers and the 49ers. The results were the same as the 2020 Championship game as the 49ers won over the Packers with a 13-10 victory off of Robbie Gould’s game-winning field goal. The final game of the weekend was between the Los Angeles Rams led by the triple-crown winner Cooper Kupp and the Tampa Bay Bucs led by Tom Brady. The Rams came away with the third game winning field goal of the weekend thanks to a clutch catch late in the game by Cooper Kupp.
Following the wild divisional round came the highly anticipated championship games. On the AFC side the Kansas City Chiefs were hosting the red hot Cincinnati Bengals. The game came down to the wire and ended up going into overtime, and although the Chiefs won the coin toss they were unable to capitalize and the Bengals advanced to the super bowl with a 27-24 victory. On the NFC side the Los Angeles Rams were hosting their division rival San Francisco 49ers. Cooper Kupp continued his dominant season and led the Rams to a 20-17 win.’
The Super Bowl was now set, The Los Angeles Rams were hosting the Cincinnati Bengals. This was a highly anticipated matchup as both quarterbacks were playing in their first Super Bowl and had never won a playoff game prior to this past season. The Rams were 4.5 point favorites to win the game and were heavily favored by Vegas and other sports betters. ThunderRidge teacher Mr. Allmendinger had this prediction for the game “I’ve gotta go with the Bengals, I think Joe Burrow will get it done, I think it will be close”. Mr. A’s prediction was pretty accurate for most of the game as the Bengals led the game the entirety of the second half. Despite the Bengals holding a lead for the majority of the second half, a Cooper Kupp touchdown reception with only 1:29 left in the game put the Rams ahead. The Bengals had a chance to win it, but were unable to convert a crucial 4th and 1 crowning the Rams as Super Bowl Champions. The Rams were full of stars who are now Super Bowl Champions for the first time, Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Matthew Stafford, and Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp are some of the stars who won their first ring. Overall, the Super Bowl was a great game and has now crowned the Los Angeles Rams as world champions.
