The Resurgence of 70's Fashion

The Resurgence of 70's Fashion

Written by Graham Jenson

There are two types of people. People who care how they look when they leave the house, and people who don't. Personally, I care a lot about clothing style. I think what you wear can give people a grasp on what type of a person you are. Not if you're a good or bad person, but what your interests are. This can be an easy way to make friends who have things in common. Recently, at school and in public, I see people wearing brighter colors, bell bottoms, and leather loafers. This tells me one thing: 70s style is making a comeback.

If you are wondering what the ideal seventies style is, here’s a sample:

As you can see, the styles look relatively similar to each other. It’s those bell-bottom jeans that catch your eye. These pants really brought out the “disco” of the seventies. Not to mention, the 60s and 70s were when the whole “hippy era” came to be. This meant bright colors, flowers, and peace signs. It was very rare that you would see someone wearing all black.

I was curious if only a certain group of people had this exotic style or if a majority of the population rocked it. So, I decided to do an interview with my father on his thoughts on the 70s style. He was born in the early 60s so that would make him about 16 years old in 1977. My dad exclaimed, “I used to wear that same outfit. Everyone was wearing these because they were trendy. If you didn't have a pair, you weren’t cool.” The librarian of ThunderRidge, Ms. Deblock was a teen in the 70s. She explained, “I loved that style. Me and all my friends would wear bell bottoms with color block shirts. It was definitely during the hippy era so we would have mushroom embroidery on our purses. I, however, don't see the 70s style coming back.”

I tend to see these bellbottoms a lot more around ThunderRidge so I wanted to interview some students about their opinion on this style. I showed my fellow schoolmates these photos and asked for their opinion. Evan Charkut (grade 11) says, “I think those pants look really goofy. I wouldn't wear them to school now, but I would if it was the 70s.” Skylar Schilling (grade 12) “I love that outfit, but I wouldn’t wear it. I do, however, see a lot of girls wearing outfits oddly similar to that.”

My consensus on the question “is 70s style coming back?” Yes, but in a different way. People who were in the seventies know what it was actually like and they think it is too exotic to come back. Teens my age look at a picture of someone from the 70s and think, “Yeah, those look like the flared pants I wore the other day. I’d say the 70s style is coming back.”
