“Put down everything that comes into your head and then you’re a writer. But an author is one who can judge his own stuff’s worth, without pity, and destroy most of it.”
~Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, a famous author
Kaitlyn Sarver has been telling stories since before she could properly write them down. Over the years she has typed, scribbled, and deleted more than 70,000 words in her quest to craft a story. She has painstakingly poured over pages, carefully crafting her characters and narrative until it was perfect. After hours spent meticulously creating a cohesive narrative, it is finally time to show it to others.
Time after time she handed her story to family members and friends, only to receive vague praise or excuses for not reading it. Time after time she was let down by mediocre feedback. Inferior suggestions did not help Kaitlyn’s writing aspirations. Kaitlyn yearned to publish her work. She wished to touch the lives of others in the way books have touched her. However, getting published is a formidable task. To get her voice out into the world, Kaitlyn needed support and advice that she won’t find from distracted family members.
To solve this problem, Kaitlyn started the Creative Writing Club this year at ThunderRidge. This club is a collaborative writing community whose goal is to uplift each other in every aspect of their writing.
No matter what writing skill you wish to develop, the creative writing club is here to help. There are plenty of opportunities to grow your skill as an author with useful feedback, lessons on storycraft and writing practice. Writing club also offers opportunities for budding editors, with feedback on your suggestions.
Do not worry if you’re not a great writer, neither are we! You don’t need a story to edit, come to the club with an open mind ready to help everyone and you’ll pick up a few tricks along the way. This club is open to helping those of all skill levels, whether you’re trying to publish a novel or casually writing a short story.
As you cultivate your creative writing skills, you might see improvements in all your writing. Creative Writing Club develops skills important for all writing in life. Here you will learn how to craft drafts, develop a healthy appreciation for feedback, and clearly convey your ideas.
Each day in the writing club starts with Kaitlyn going over announcements and introducing the agenda for the day. Most days involve reading material that one of the members has brought, then providing feedback. Some days there is a friendly writing competition or a speed writing competition.
