Winter sports have come and gone quite quickly.
The excitement given by basketball, hockey, swimming, and many other sports seasons will soon fade away, but more sports will be able to fill in for the spring season.
Girls tennis is one of the up and coming sports, and talented athletes are gearing up to compete this spring season.
Tennis works in a point system that is quite unique:
Four points in order to win a game,
Six games in order to win a set, and
Two (best of three) or three (best of five) sets wins a tennis match
Tennis takes a lot of athleticism, endurance, and speed to succeed, as athletes must pick the right time to strike and catch opponents off-guard to win.
After going 4-4 during their 2022 varsity season, athletes hope to surpass last year’s win totals and build a winning tradition for their 2023 season.
Varsity has a significantly more number of seniors and more experienced players this year than they had last year.
Also, many new talented freshmen are trying out this year to display what they can do on the Tennis court.
One freshman, Amy Oaks (9), is looking forward to her first season at ThunderRidge.
“I’m looking forward to the Vista vs. ThunderRidge games because of the high tensions,” said Amy about her excitement for the season.
This is Amy’s first season playing tennis and she has lots of teammates and coaches around her who can help her with this new activity.
“I’m looking forward to meeting new friends and being able to learn a new sport,” she said when asked about what she’s excited for.
She’s currently getting all her equipment and her things to be able to compete this year.
Amy isn’t the only student trying a new thing for the first time this year.
Many kids are trying new things whether it’s a sport, a club, or even a new class.
Learning something new takes lots of dedication and commitment and constant practice.
That’s what Becca Lee (12) had to do when she first started playing.
She started playing three years ago, when she was a sophomore.
“I want to do well at regionals and make varsity,” Becca said when asked about her goals for the year.
After practicing some of her tennis skills over the summer, she feels confident and ready going into her last season at ThunderRidge.
As these talented ladies prepare for a great season, be sure to keep up with events, scores, and how the girls are doing this season.
Their first match is on March 3rd in Parker, so try to be there and support the team.
