This semester marks the beginning of spring sports preseason! Including Track and Field, coached by Mrs. Teague. Preseason helps student athletes prepare for their real season. Most student athletes keep themselves busy during off seasons by working out or competing in other sports. However, track specifically is hard to train year round. During preseason the track is covered with snow so that means getting creative and finding other ways to train. As a school we run in the hallways and sometimes run at the nearby recreation centers.
Track and Field athletes we interviewed to understand preseason from their perspective.
Kenny Carpenter (12) explained that “Preseason is a good way to meet all the new runners and take under our wing since I'm one of the few seniors we have this year. I feel like by doing this they feel a little more welcomed and excited to join the TR track family.” Kenny is a great example for the new running sport. He is committed to run Track and Field at Colorado State University next year.
Next Gabriella Levi (11) talked about what track means to her. She said “I am really excited for this season because I have made many new goals for myself, I really want to improve my times, so I could make it to state! I also want all the new runners to have someone they can look up to and feel comfortable talking to.” When she was a Freshman, having someone to look up to was very helpful and she can’t wait to be there for the new runners.
Lexie Okuno (10) is new to the sport this year and is going to take on the challenge of hurdling. We asked her why she was interested in hurdling. She responded, “I was originally interested in track because I was a soccer player, but wanted to try something different. I never thought I would be hurdling though! My dad owns a gym and focuses on my speed training and he recommended it to me. It's definitely going to be a challenge but I'm excited!”
As you can tell from these athletes they are excited that the track and field preseason has started and can’t wait for the real season to happen. If you or anyone you know is interested in track and field we strongly encourage you to show up to preseason practices. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday right after school!
