The Grammys is one of the most watched award shows in America. This year at the 2023 Grammys there were many performances by some very well known artists such as Bad Bunny, Lizzo, Sam Smith, Steve Lacy, as well as Mary J. Blige just to name a few and was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah for the second year in a row.
The 5th annual Grammys Award Ceremony was held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 5th, 2023. The nominations were announced on November 15th, 2022. The grammys recognized the best recordings, compositions, as well as artists of course. There are 91 categories, and to name a few were Record of the year, Album of the year, Best new artist, and many more. This year 5 new categories were added: Best Alternative Music performance, Best Americana Performance, Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media, Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, and, lastly, Songwriter of the Year non-classical.
For record of the year, Lizzo took the win with her hit song “About Damn Time,” and she was also the first Black woman to win the award since Whitney Houston in 1994. For album of the year, Bonnie Raitt won with his hit album “Just Like That,” as well as song of the year for “Just Like That,” becoming the first solo songwriter to win Amy Whinehouse in 2008. Samara Joy won best new artist, becoming the second jazz artist to win the award and the first since Esperanza Spalding in 2011. Beyonce was the artist that received the most nominations. With a career of 88 nominations, Beyonce tied with her husband, Jay-Z, as the most nominated artist in grammy history. Bad Bunny was also the first artist ever to be nominated for album of the year with his Spanish album “Un Verano Sin Ti .”
While there were so many award nominations and performances, the whole point of this award ceremony is to recognize all the types of music and genres that bring people together. This ceremony works to celebrate artists, and helps introduce people to new music and expand their music taste.
