Celebrations of Mother’s Day trace all the way back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans. They hosted festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, Christians also celebrated mothers during a festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” This was also said to be an original celebration before Mother’s Day was declared a holiday.
This year in 2022, Mother’s Day will take place on Sunday, May 8th. Mother’s Day was originally created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Later on in life, Jarvis worked on removing the date from the calendar believing that commercialism was destroying the true values and importance of Mother's Day.
Woodrow Wilson signed Mother’s Day into law in 1914 as a way to publicly express our love and reverence for the mothers of our country. Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is represented in different forms throughout the nation. Each region may celebrate differently but we are all for one, and one for all.
Mother’s Day has been around for quite a while now but did you know these fun facts?
