Cross Country is pretty unique, because every race usually has hundreds of people! Some meets even have thousands! These athletes deserve attention after the hard work they have put in this entire season, especially since they have been training since May and running and lifting everyday. One person we interviewed was Ben Lee, a freshman on Varsity. He said Cross Country has been awesome so far, and that “his favorite part was racing against people.” One impressive accomplishment in Cross Country this year was breaking the school record for the 5k race! Evan Charkut set that record by running 3.1 miles in 15 minutes and 10 seconds! “Cross Country has been a grind since summer,” said Evan, “Winning and helping the team was my favorite part.” Come cheer on the boys and girls at State on Saturday at Norris-Penrose Event Center at Colorado Springs at 11:00.
Golf Season has ended so we want to celebrate the accolades that they achieved this season. ThunderRidge faced some tough competition but overall had a very good season. Golf is a game full of strategy and skill like sports like basketball or football. Austin Hunt (9) had a great overall season in his first year with ThunderRidge.
We asked Freshman Austin Hunt about his experiences with Golf. At Regionals he placed 7th which was the highest placing for ThunderRidge and at the latest tournament for championships he placed 29th. That’s pretty solid for a freshman. First we asked how he has liked it so far. “It was pretty fun, we had a great team experience and we were able to experience tournaments and games as a team. You can tell that this golf team has lots of chemistry.” At Regionals, ThunderRidge placed 3rd out of 10 schools. With the mix of the seniors, juniors, sophomores, and the new additions of some of the freshmen, it makes a very talented team for ThunderRidge and this is proved by this placing.
We were curious about what his favorite part of this golf season was. “My favorite part was being able to practice and play almost every day.” These players spend hours at practices and probably hours on their own time to help ThunderRidge with the team. That’s some school spirit and pride. At practices, All of the players take it so seriously, but they also try to keep it fun. That’s what makes this team so special, they get along so well and are always having fun. Even though golf doesn’t strike people as a sport with lots of entertainment, it goes to show how committed these people are to it and how they can have lots of fun with it.Golf isn’t necessarily a team sport, but this team still supports each other and works together well.
ThunderRidge also did very well at State this year. They placed an impressive 7th in the State Championship held at City Park in Downtown Denver. They were so close to placing top 5 by being just a shot away. Another important highlight of this tournament was Ryan Oro (12): Oro had the best individual round of the entire state shooting a 66.
We are incredibly proud of our Boys' Golf team for their great season and exceptional results!
This fall season, we have had many sports compete and battle for victories, including Boys Soccer. Varsity’s record so far is 6-7-1 and are 4-5 in league play, with JV having a similar record at 5-7, and Freshmen at 3-7-3. Whether competing away or home, they have been ready to play and fight for a win. Working together to improve everyday, these boys have created a great bond together.
We asked Sam Haworth (9), one of three freshmen on the varsity this year, about his experience with soccer so far. “It’s been really fun and it’s been good getting to know people,” he said. He really likes how he’s made friendships with some of the freshmen he didn’t really know. As a freshmen, he’s felt very welcomed to the team and is excited for upcoming years and continuing to build his team’s spirit. He’s played defense throughout the year and has switched around defensive positions.
As you may come to notice, teamwork and building relationships has been a very important part of this team’s success this year. It is important as they race down the pitch, communicating and looking for their next attack or pass. Soccer has been a part of all these players’ lives, and as they keep bonding, this connection between player and sport only becomes stronger.
As they finish up their season, we congratulate them on a great season and wish them the best in upcoming years.
