The Mazda Miata was originally introduced in 1989. In the 33 years this legendary Japanese roadster has been around, it’s made a huge mark. It’s legendary for being a cute, small, and cheap car very well suited for track and racing.
The first model of Mazda MX-5, known as the NA, is one of the most popular models with enthusiasts. This model was produced from 1989 to 1997, and is easily distinguishable by its pop-up headlights that were only featured on the NA model. Until 1994, the Miata featured a 1.6L Inline 4 B6ZE(RS) Twin cam engine with only 116 horsepower. Later models featured a 1.8L model which pumped out some extra power.
In 1998, the second “version” of the MX-5 was released. This one was called the “NB”. The NB isn’t much different design wise to the NA, except for the removal of the pop up headlights, opting for a fixed headlight. The NB shipped with the same 1.8L B6ZE(RS) as the NA, but there was no 1.6L model available.
The third generation of Mazda Miata, referred to as the “NC”, was a drastic change for the vehicle. The new engine, a 2.0L MZR LF-VE instead of the 1.8L B6ZE in the NB, was more powerful. Many design changes to the front and rear were made, along with chassis improvements. These changes were very different, including a redesigned front bumper, rear bumper and door assembly.
The newest generation of Mazda Miata, the “ND”, is an interesting and completely new design to match the “aesthetic” of their current vehicles. It incorporates Mazda’s new, hi-tech “Skyactiv Technology” which pushes out more power while being more fuel efficient. These cars are completely redesigned, and look much more modern than the previous generations of Mazda Miata, featuring sleek curves. Yet it still contains that trademark smile that every single Miata model has had.
The Mazda Miata has been around for nearly 33 years, and in those three decades, the Miata has grown a lot and changed. It’s been a favorite for many wanting to get into cars, especially because of its price.
